Dear Art Student and Parents, August 11, 2008
Welcome to an adventure in art. I am expecting this to be a delightful, interesting class that will encourage your creativity, build on your talents, and provide stimulation for the part of your brain that isn’t used enough in academic classes.
We will meet one time per week from 10:05-10:55 A.M. Please come on time, with all your materials, prepared to work. The class time will be divided between instruction, demonstration, and personal working time. Projects will be due weekly, and many will be displayed. Parents are invited to come upstairs to see the rotating exhibit.
Just as you don’t need to already speak French to take a French Class, you don’t need to be an artist, or already know how to draw to take this art class. Everyone who is willing to learn to “see differently” is welcome.
The semester begins with drawing: in charcoal, pencil, marker, and pastels. Basic watercolor follows, with the class progressing, as it is able. You will be required to do 5 large projects for the semester, and these will be discussed in depth when we meet. Each student must have a personal sketchbook (see supply list), and will have 4 sketches due each week. You will learn to draw by drawing regularly. Some class time will be available, especially at first.
The lab fees will cover some materials but if you find you like something we don’t provide, see me—creativity is welcome! Each student will need some sort of portfolio to carry your work back and forth from school to home, etc. These may be stored in a closet in my classroom for safekeeping during the school day.
My favorite art store is in Tampa—Pearl Art Center 3916 W. Hillsborough Ave, Tampa. Telephone number: 813-354-8555 or 1-800-451-7327 or www.pearlpaint.com if you need materials, or just inspiration! I also love this website for great discount materials: www.cheapjoes.com
Due to need for personalized instruction and working space, enrollment is limited to 8 students per class each semester. If you want this class and it is full, see me about being on the list for 2nd semester.
Making art has enriched my life, and I consider it a privilege to work with this class this year. Please see me if you have questions.
